Cool Centers

The Imperial County Public Health Department encourages Imperial County residents to take the appropriate precautions in the summer in order to prevent heat-related illnesses. Locally thirty Cool Centers are available throughout Imperial County where individuals can cool off during the hottest parts of the day. When temperatures rise, officials notify healthcare professionals, schools, senior centers, nursing homes, and businesses on ways to reduce heat-related illnesses. Officials encourage residents to check on neighbors such as the elderly, disabled or young children that might be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. Pet owners are also encouraged to protect their pets from the summer’s heat by always keeping plenty of fresh water available for pets, providing access to a shaded area and never leaving animals in a car during the summer months. Area Plan Overview

Area Plan Update:

Each Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is responsible for developing an Area Plan, with annual update plans, for submission to the California Department of Aging (CDA). Area Agency on Aging, Imperial County, is currently in the process of updating the annual Area Plan for Planning and Service Area 24 (PSA24). PSA24 covers Imperial County. The Area Plan describes the specific services that will be provided to the older population of PSA24 and covers the planning period 2014-2015. The plan also contains the goals and objectives that the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and its staff and volunteers plan to accomplish during the planning period. The plan is due to CDA by May 1, 2014.

As part of the plan update, AAA conducted a needs assessment and a series of public hearings to solicit comments and input from elders, caregivers, and service providers in PSA24. At each public hearing, AAA provides a presentation detailing the various programs and services that will be provided to elders and their caregivers in PSA24. A copy of the needs assessment, draft Area Plan Update, and presentation are available on our website for your review.
